Dorothy is elated when she learns that Jeopardy! will be taping shows in Miami. It’s her favorite show and she’s determined to appear on it. She and Blanche will take the test, not that Blanche cares anything about Jeopardy! It’s Alex Trebek she cares about. The day of the test comes. Blanche tries in vain to get Dorothy and another gentleman to help her. The producers call two days later. They tell her that Dorothy has been asked to appear for an audition for the show and that Blanche flunked. Rose has been feeling down with her volunteer work at the hospital. Dorothy and Blanche have noticed this and get her an adorable dog. Rose decides to use him to cheer up sick patients. A woman named Grace has been sick in the hospital. She meets Rose’s dog and perks up. Her husband says it’s the most spirit she’s shown since arriving there. Unfortunately she later takes a turn for the worse and passes away. Seeing how upset the husband is, Rose gives the dog to him in an effort to help him be less lonely.
Dorothy is studying nonstop. Sophia tells her she’s being too intense and should slow down. Dorothy ends up falling asleep and dreaming that she’s on the show. The other contestants are Charlie Dietz and the returning champion… Rose??? The categories in the Jeopardy! round are ridiculously easy and cater to Rose’s life experiences. But it’s all too ridiculous for Dorothy. Alex Trebek points out that anything can happen in a dream. During Double Jeopardy!, Dorothy goes on a tear of correct responses to multiple $1,000 answers. Final Jeopardy! rolls around and the answer is “American hero buried in Grant’s Tomb.” Dorothy is stunned when the correct response is “who is Cary Grant.” She demands a ruling and Merv Griffin himself verifies it… and says no parting gifts. The day of the audition arrives. Dorothy impresses with her knowledge but becomes dismissive of her two opponents. She ultimately is not picked to appear on the show. The man who runs the audition tells her it’s that they don’t think anyone would root for her but lauds her on her impressive wealth of knowledge. Sophia comforts her saying that she’s what the country is all about- the daughter of immigrants who was the first in her family to go to college. How could anyone not root for her?
